Following the leak of a draft bill within Turkey’s 11th Judicial Reform Package, which could introduce prison sentences and further restrictions targeting LGBTI+ people, renewed concerns have emerged about the safety and rights of transgender individuals in Turkey. International human rights organisations, including ILGA-Europe and Human Rights Watch, have raised alarm over the increasing pressure faced by the LGBTI+ community.
Despite ongoing challenges, including attempts to ban Pride marches, restrictions on freedom of assembly, and the closure of social media accounts, trans people in Turkey continue to resist marginalisation and fight for visibility, dignity, and equal rights.
The debate has also reached Sweden following the case of Bella Demhat, a transgender woman whose asylum application was rejected by the Swedish Migration Agency and who now faces the risk of deportation to Turkey. Her case has prompted broader discussions about whether Turkey can be considered a safe country for transgender individuals.
In this panel discussion, activists and community members will explore the realities of being trans in Turkey today, including the growing climate of uncertainty, discrimination, and fear. The panel is open to everyone who wishes to learn more, show solidarity, and support trans people in Turkey and individuals at risk of deportation.
